About the School
Bulenga Modern Primary School
Bulenga Modern is a small Primary School in a rural village in Uganda, East Africa. The school is located in Bulenga village, 17 km from Kampala, the capital city. The school has 200 pupils from Nursery (Baby Class and Top Class) to Primary 7. The children have lessons in 4 main subjects; English, Maths, Science and Social Studies as well as Writing, Reading, P.E., R.E. and Luganda classes.
The school is basic; classrooms consist of wooden benches and a blackboard. Teachers have one textbook per class if they are lucky and chalk can often be scarce. School lunches are cooked over firewood in an unfinished shelter.
Despite this, the atmosphere at school is wonderful and the children are full of enthusiasm and eager to learn.

School Life
The children arrive at school at 7:30 am and begin lessons at 8:00am after morning assembly. At break time, the younger classes receive a cup of watery maize porridge. At break and lunch time the children love playing football and netball. As equipment is scare, this is often with a ball made of banana leaf fibres or plastic bags.
At lunch time the Nursery classes go home and the older pupils are given a meal of posho and beans everyday. Primary 1 to 6 finish classes at 5pm after which they participate in P.E. or help to clean the school, fetch water and firewood.

Children in Uganda sit their Primary Leaving Exams (P.L.E) in Primary Seven. These exams decide whether they are able to continue onto secondary education if their family can afford this. As a result, the Primary Sevens work extremely hard, often having evening lessons well into the night.
The Boarding Section
The school has a Boarding Section where some children stay during term time. They are looked after by the school Matron and receive three meals a day at school. The children that are sponsored as boarders are usually orphans with no family nearby or are looked after by families who are unable to support them.
